Boren Forum Job Fair

Thanks to all who attended the

2011 Boren Forum Job Fair on September 9th!

The annual Boren Forum Job Fair brings together outstanding U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who represent the future of the U.S. national security establishment. All attendees have been competitively awarded David L. Boren National Security Education Program (NSEP) scholarships and fellowships, which funded study overseas in countries critical to U.S. national security interests. In return, NSEP alumni work for a period of time with the federal government or with a federally-funded organization in an area related to national security. The Boren Forum Job Fair provides an excellent opportunity for you to meet and recruit these outstanding and highly motivated candidates.

About Boren Forum Members:

Alumni of the National Security Education Program (NSEP), the National Flagship Language Program (NFLP), and the English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) program make up the Boren Forum and will be your audience at the Boren Forum Job Fair. The Boren Forum Job Fair is a unique opportunity for you to meet outstanding young Americans who are eager to apply their education and skills to your company’s or organization’s mission.

Boren Forum members are:

  • International: Since 1994, NSEP alumni have been selected to go to 125 countries of strategic importance to the United States. The majority spend one year abroad researching and studying a non-Western language. NSEP funds students to study in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and some countries throughout Eastern Europe.
  • Multi-lingual: NSEP alumni achieve remarkably high levels of proficiency in their languages of study. Flagship alumni and others achieve level 3 (superior) language proficiency at the end of their NSEP-funded study. Critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Persian, and Hindi are commonly studied, as are Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Swahili, and many others.
  • Multi-disciplinary: NSEP alumni have a demonstrated interest in national security issues and have strong academic credentials in the social sciences, including political science, international relations and development, security issues, business, conflict studies, agriculture, law, cultural and language studies. Others study public health, math, engineering, hard sciences, IT, and English.
  • Competitive: NSEP alumni are selected through a highly competitive national competition in which more than 700 applicants apply for roughly 130 spots.
  • Bright: NSEP alumni are in the top 10% of their college or graduate school classes.
  • Educated: Most undergraduate NSEP award recipients go on to pursue higher degrees. Post-BA alumni have masters and doctoral degrees in relevant areas.
  • Culturally sensitive and competent: NSEP alumni have in-depth cultural understanding and regional expertise that far exceeds their peers. A combination of academic study and real life experience enhances their capability to deal with challenges faced in adapting to another culture.
